Are you or someone close to you is expecting? Congratulations! Maybe like most mom-to-be, you are also intrigued if can you feel the baby move at 12 weeks and what does it do. While the fetus is pretty small at this stage, the answer is YES!

A baby moving inside you could be one of the highlights of every woman’s pregnancy. Feeling its sensation and knowing that your child is alive is a beautiful thing.

Usually, babies at 12 weeks weigh an ounce yet most moms can experience what they described as flutters. It refers to those fetal movements called quickening that could be hard to determine at first.

Let me help you distinguish quickening from just being gassy or having muscle twitch.


The answers will vary widely, but there are some cases or “averages” that can help you find out. For first-time moms, they would feel little flutters at around 20 weeks said certified nurse-midwife, Marion McCartney.

On their next pregnancies, they can experience quickening as soon as 16 weeks. Likewise, thinner or slimmer women tend to feel it soon compared to others.

  • The truth is, the baby starts moving from around six to eight weeks, but since he or she is too small, you can’t feel the movements yet.
  • Around ten weeks, the baby will be still pretty tiny at 1” long.
  • Few women who are pregnant for the second time and so on could feel quickening at around 8-10 weeks.
  • Sometime around 12 to 16 weeks, most pregnant moms can feel their baby move for the first time.
  • Remember, you may or may not feel the baby’s movement if you are overweight, have a tilted uterus or simply for no reason at all.
  • The broad range of when women can feel the fetal movements is from 13-25 weeks.

Now, men would also want to participate in the pregnancy, and most of them can do so once they feel their baby move from the outside. However, this is possible if the baby is between 20-24 weeks.


As your unborn child is continuously developing, he or she will stretch out. The movements become more noticeable like kicking, rolling and punching as you get further along pregnancy. Babies also tend to respond to the noise or sound around them.

On the 10th week, he or she can move their head, stretch, open their jaws and touch their face. At week 12, they learn to yawn.

Aside from this age factor, specific foods can also make your unborn child more active. Eating fruits or something sweet can get the baby “excited.” Remember that there is no particular numbers of movements require but it is important to know that the baby is moving and normal.

You now know that it is possible and healthy to feel the quickening or baby’s first little kicks in as early as 12 weeks. However, it could be hard to determine if those are fetal movements or you are just feeling gassy.

To help you distinguish, you can refer to these signals or early signs.

One way is to base it on your baby’s age. The uterus won’t reach the belly button not until you are 20 – weeks pregnant. If you are still early on and feel that the baby is higher, we can say that it is not the baby yet.

You can compare the movement to “bubbles,” flutters or “swishes.” Some tend to mistake internal movements or gas bubbles for fetal movements.

Do you feel insistent little thumps or changes that feel stronger and stronger? We can be sure that it is the baby. Since the baby is too small, the movements will not hurt you, but as your child grows, the movements tend to feel uncomfortable.

Likewise, if the baby is quite large or has grown up to 28 weeks or more, the actions may start to hurt you as the child is starting to run out of a room. You might also hear the tell-tale signs and recognize the movements in as early as 16 weeks.

From simple movements to kicking your ribs or stretching and pushing down on your side or bladder, you will be amazed at how the baby’s movements’ intensifies. Gradually, it will be huge enough that you can feel it.

Soon, you will get used to him or her swishing, pushing, kicking, twisting or thumping and realize that babies also follow a sleep cycle. They won’t always be moving as there are times that they too, want to rest. Growing up is a tiring business huh!


As parents, we are mostly concern about our child’s comfort and safety so it is normal for you to be curious if can you feel the baby move at 12 weeks. On the third trimester, your doctor will typically ask you to do a “kick count” daily.

Monitoring your baby’s daily movements at this stage is crucial. Again, babies sleep too so if the baby is not yet moving on your first try, maybe he or she is just tired. There are also quiet days when they will not move that much.
