How to Clean High Chair Straps and Muck-Free

Regardless if you supervise your kid while eating, you can’t control where his food goes. You will be amazed how food gets almost everywhere in your child’s high chair. You might be thinking by now how to clean high chair straps.

The bib is also not useful as foods can still make it to the high chair straps and even under the high chair cover. It would be great if our younger kids can only eat, swallow and digest their food but that’s not the case.

While high chairs are essential during meal time, these could also be evil. High chair straps are usually white, beige or light cream in color! It could be disappointing for us parents or guardians, to see those beautiful, clean straps turn into greenish, yellowish to brownish one.

Like most parents, we know you can’t stand looking at these straps as you think they are so gross and filthy your child should not be using them.

We gather practical ways on how to clean those dirty high chair straps to help you with this dilemma.

Here are the Materials

One does not need expensive materials or solutions to clean the high chair straps and even the entire equipment. Most of the cleaning materials below are present at home or in stores.

1. Baking soda or disinfecting solution

Baking soda is one of the cleaning materials that have plenty of other purposes. A powerful cleaning agent, baking soda can help freshen, clean and deodorize the high chair straps and even its cover.

Baking soda can also absorb strong food odors that linger in the straps. It is also natural and toxic-free thus we can be sure that our baby’s skin won’t be irritated that is usually the case with some harsh cleaning products in the market.

You can also choose and disinfecting solution in cleaning the straps. Any brand will do as long as it is mild and gentle to the skin.

2. All Purpose Cleaner

There are quite plenty of all-purpose cleaners in the market these days. All of which are promising us to be the best in vanquishing messes or cleaning multi-surfaces. If you are overwhelmed with these all purpose cleaners, check this review to compare.

Make sure to choose the all-purpose cleaner that has versatile cleaning capabilities as other brands only have distinct surfaces to clean such as glass and metal. Likewise, look for the one that is toxic free.

3. Bleach and detergent

It is another great cleaning agent commonly found in households. Since there are removable high chair straps these days, you just remove it and soak it in soapy water with bleach. Other moms prefer using bleach to get rid of food stains.

However, some brands are too strong or contain harsh chemicals as their cleaning agent so choose wisely. If your child’s high chair doesn’t have removable straps, bleach in spray bottles works great.

Any detergent or soap dish will do as long as it is toxic-free and does not contain harmful chemicals as it can deteriorate the straps.

4. Scrub or toothbrush or wipe cloth

We recommend you use wipe cloth for every day cleaning. It is ideal for removing visible pieces of foods such as crumbs. For hard to remove stains, a little scrub or an old toothbrush is great to use.

You can also find wipe cloths available in the market that you can use with your all purpose cleaner or detergent soap. Do not use steel wool or scourers as these can only damage the straps.

5. Vinegar

Undiluted or white vinegar are said to be effective in removing stains, especially on white clothes. Others use this as an ingredient in making homemade cleaning solution such as an all-purpose cleaner and mold remover.

Likewise, the vinegar can also absorb the smell of bleach and detergent on the high chair strap, leaving it smelling clean. You can use your vinegar solution in sanitizing the whole high chair and not just the straps.

How to Clean High Chair Straps: We Made Every Step Easy!

Proper high chair cleaning is essential to ensure an excellent dining experience with the family. Likewise, a sanitized and well-cleaned high chair contributes to a less stressful but more pleasant bonding time with your child.

Not only that you are keeping the high chair straps looking neat, but you are also preventing harmful bacteria from spreading which cause foodborne illness.

For removable high chair straps:

Remove the straps and throw it in the washing machine. You can use your regular detergent soap and bleach and wash it accordingly.

Make sure to read the cleaning instructions from the manufacturer to avoid using non-recommended methods and products. Some strap materials are sensitive to bleaching agents or certain cleaning products.

You can make your cleaning solution by mixing hot water with your laundry soap or detergent in a plastic bottle or spray container. Soak the straps in the solution to soften the dirt or molds. You can also spray down your chosen cleaner

Use an old toothbrush or scrub to gently remove the dirt and focus on places where food gets caked. Continue scrubbing to loosen the build-up and rinse it thoroughly. Hang the straps to dry it. Do not toss it in the machine to dry as this can deform the straps and its accessories.

Although most high chair straps today are machine washable, yours might not be one of them. For non-removable high chair straps:

Add 1 tbsp of your regular detergent or dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Dip a wipe cloth into the bucket and clean the straps. Let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes, allowing the hardened food to soften and break down.

If you are using an all-purpose cleaner, spray it down to the straps and massaged it into the stains. Let it sit for five minutes then rinse it with water and allow it to air dry. Also, make sure to wipe the metal parts to prevent rust formation.

According to Gina McDowell, Food Safety Technical Consultant at Ecolab, high chair cleaning is more than more than just wiping as it is essential to sanitized as well.

Although high chair straps are non-food contact surfaces and do not require frequent cleaning, it is still important to disinfect it using an all-purpose cleaner, baking soda or detergent.

If you are using a cloth or towel, make sure it is also clean. Proper cleaning of the strap will remove oils and other food particles to make it useful for sanitizing.

Pro Tips According to Ecolab

Ecolab is a company that provides solution to promote safe food and clean environment. They offered a three-step best practice to keep your child’s entire high chair clean and sanitized. It should be carried out after every single use.

Before applying solutions and other cleaning agents, make sure that the entire high chair is free from food crumbs. You can use a vacuum with a narrow removable nozzle or cotton swab for hard to reach areas.

For hardened spots, use warm water first with a mild cleaning solution. Others prefer to use a mixture of water, soap dish and vinegar for this and allow it to soak for a few minutes before scrubbing it off.

You need a sanitizer or disinfectant in a spray bottle or a multi-surface cleaner or detergent. You also need a towel bucket and clean towels.

  • Apply the detergent or all-purpose cleaner solution on the high chair including the straps and wipe it with a clean cloth.
  • Rinse the strap if they are removable and if not, clean it together with other surfaces.
  • Disinfect the high chair or apply sanitizer by spraying the solution. Make sure to air dry the high chair.

These steps are similar to the steps above, but we put emphasis in disinfecting the high chair. If this is the first time you will use a disinfectant solution, test it first on a small area of the strap or a similar material.

Other disinfecting and sanitizing solutions will not work well with bleaching agents and other household cleaners, so it pays to read the label. Most importantly, keep all these materials out of reach of your children and pets to avoid injuries and poisoning.

We hope that you enjoyed and learned from our short tutorial. More than just wiping and cleaning, disinfecting is a must not only for the straps but the whole high chair.

Aside from your child’s playpen and crib, his or her high chair is where they spend most of their time during the day. Thus, it is important that we keep it clean and free from molds and dirt build-up.

Their dining chair also where they learn the value of food and enjoys the time to eat and bond with the whole family.

Kids are kids. They never listen to anyone. As their parents, it is our duty to look after them. They easily get sick. The floating virus in the air causes all the problem. This problem can be prevented, only if you add a humidifier in your baby’s nursery. It can stop virus from floating around. It can also help your baby to get a good night sleep, prevent any breathing problem.
