Safe and Effective Ways: How to Make a Baby Sneeze?

Is your baby having a hard time dealing with a runny or stuffy nose? Do you have an idea how to make a baby sneeze? Apparently, babies count on us on clearing their nose since they don’t know how to blow it yet. However, we cannot induce sneeze all the time to get rid of their snooty nose.

As parents, baby congestion could be disappointing and challenging for us. Babies with colds tend to feel uncomfortable and cranky which results in an unhappy baby. Likewise, it is more difficult to nurse your baby, either bottle feeding or breastfeeding if he or she has a stuffy nose.

Newborns to babies up to four months who are suffering from congestion can also have a hard time sleeping. Thus, they need our help to decongest their nose and make them feel better.

What You Will Need

They will not learn the proper way of blowing their nose until they are toddlers. We cannot always guide them to sneeze to clear the mucus. It is up to us to clear it for them.

Below are some of the most effective and common tools mommies all around the world are using for baby congestion.

1.Saline Nasal Drop and Sprays

  • Use a clean plastic eye dropper when applying the solution.

2. Vaporizer, Humidifier Or Steam

A clear nasal passage is important so the baby can breathe just right. You can use vaporizer or humidifier to moist the air in your baby’s nursery. This will aid in losing the mucus.

If you don’t have this equipment at home, a simple steam in the bathroom or any close room will do. This will allow the nose to drain secretions and open clogged breathing passages so the baby will breathe easier.

3.Nasal Aspirator

This includes the traditional rubber bulb or bulb syringe. There are other variations of the nasal aspirator in the market these days so make sure that you are getting the one that is designed for infants.

Aside from bulb aspirators that are shaped like turnips or bulbs, the Snotsucker is another popular nasal aspirator. It has filter tubes where you can suck snot from your baby’s nose. These devices appear to be equally effective in suction and reducing congestion.

If you are still aiming for the baby to sneeze to clear the gunk out of his nose, try tickling the tip of his or her nostril. A little bit of black pepper might help as well but don’t overdo it. Others also suggest exposing the child to a bright light to induce sneezing.

They call it Photic Sneezing or sun sneezing wherein the individual sneezes as a response to a stimulus such as bright light. However, this technique still needs more explanation and evidence.

The Better Solutions on How to Make a Baby Sneeze

We know that inducing sneeze could be more challenging than keeping your baby’s nose clear from mucus. Here are safe, proven and effective ways on how you can get rid of baby congestion

1. If You Are Using Nasal Aspirators – be sure to use the appropriate aspirator to avoid nose infection. If you are using the rubber bulb, insert its tip into your baby’s clogged nose. Create a vacuum then, slowly release it and allow the suction to draw out the mucus. Remove it and rinse the bulb well.

  • Rinse the bulb with mild soap and water before and after using it.
  • Be gentle when suctioning to prevent inflaming the baby’s nasal passage and other injuries.
  • Repeat the process as often as needed

2. For saline nasal drops and spray  – wash your hands first before doing the procedure.

  • Place your baby in flat a surface or cradle him or her. Spray only a few drops of the saline solution to the baby’s nostril.
  • After delivering the drops, put your baby a semi-upright position for five minutes. It is normal that the baby will sneeze some of the mucus so wipe his nose with a clean cloth or tissue.
  • Clean the tip of the dropper or the bottle of the saline solution after every use. Do not administer the procedure for more than four times a day to avoid nose infection and damaging the nasal passage.
  • You can also combine the use of saline solution with nasal aspirators. The saline will allow the mucus to soften and loosen making it easier for the aspirator to remove the mucus.

3. Steam bath – running a vaporizer helps in relaxing the baby as well as thinning secretions that will cause the baby to sneeze.

  • Take your baby in the bathroom and close the door. Just turn the hot water in the shower or bath tub.
  • The steam will help him or her to unclog the breathing passages.
  • Just stand or sit in the steamy room and avoid taking your baby in the shower or the hot water might burn him.
  • The moist air will help to loosen the mucus thus, using humidifiers in the nursery room is highly recommended.
